Deutsche Kinemathek

Grand opening in the historic E-Werk

The Deutsche Kinemathek is opening its new location in Berlin’s E-Werk with the exhibition “Screentime.” The installation uses the industrial architecture of the hall to bring together film and photographic collections from over a century of German film and television history.
Large-format projections, monitors, photographs, and objects are distributed throughout the space, forming an open structure of images, fragments, and sound. Familiar scenes meet rarely shown archive material, production photos meet moving images.
The focus is on working with images: their creation, their circulation, their continued existence. “Screentime” shows film and television history not as a closed chapter, but as an ongoing process shaped by technical developments, institutional decisions, and cultural contexts.
The design picks up on the character of the E-Werk and makes the space itself part of the exhibition. Textiles, light, and projections structure the hall without closing it off. The result is an installation that changes depending on the viewer’s perspective and movement.
Accompanying the exhibition, the Deutsche Kinemathek offers a program of screenings, talks, and events in the studio cinema.
