New construction of the U5 subway line in Hamburg

Lights for five stations of the new U5: Stellingen, Gärtnerstraße, Hoheluftbrücke, Universität and Beethovenstraße

The U5 is a new subway line operated by Hamburger Hochbahn and represents one of the largest infrastructure projects in German public transport. Twenty-four new stations are being built along a route of around 29 kilometers—from northeast Hamburg through the city center to Osdorf in the west. Seven of these stations offer convenient connections to the existing subway and commuter rail network.

Among other things, the line will serve the districts of Bramfeld and Steilshoop, the City Nord office district, and central facilities such as the University of Hamburg, the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, the main railway station, and the sports and event venues in Altonaer Volkspark. In total, important residential, work, and educational locations will be connected to the subway network, some for the first time.

The U5 will be operated as a fully automatic, driverless subway and will enable a dense frequency of up to 90 seconds. It will be operated emission-free with electricity from renewable energies.

The entire U5 line is scheduled to be put into operation in sections by 2040. Up to 315,000 passengers per day are expected in the future.
